The Women's Empowerment Model ”Corn Seed Women” or Ixoq R'ija Ixim in Mayan Quiche, has been developed by non-profit organisation: Fundacion Progresar in Guatemala through the funding from the Foundation Support for Development. The Model is innovative and holistic and has been developed over time based on best practices and successful approaches from development projects around the world combined with experience from the implementation in Guatemala and inputs from the women. The Project uses an integrated approach to support the women, i.e., training in gender equality, women's rights, entrepreneurship development and horticulture and small livestock. It organises women into women village saving and credit groups and provides micro loans for the start-up of the women's own business. The women make monthly savings to their own bank account.
In 2024, The Project supported more than 330 villages in Guatemala benefitting over 6,300 women and indirectly supporting over 36.000 persons. Approximately 60 groups with over 1,300 women are started annually.
2024 an alliance was formed with the largest microfinance organisation in Guatemala which will continue to support women groups that after five years have graduated from Fundacion Progresar's Women's Empowerment Project. In this way, they will receive continued financing for business expansion and Fundacion Progresar can use funds to support new women groups.
